The Tumbleweed builds all kinds of little sets, but I tend to find it a little bit much to have all these little things taking up space. After she went to bed, I took a bunch of the little pet sets and put them together into one big Pet Hotel.
Now they all have a place to stay!
It was no surprise the way it concluded either. The Tumbleweed had eagerly completed things during the first several days at home and only had a couple things left to do when we left (she was frantically folding laundry until the last minute). When we returned from our trip she quickly finished the last requirements and earned her prize:

With so much excitement about the new Hexapillar, the Dandelion wanted his too. Unfortunately, he still had 3 activities left to do. After a couple tantrums he finally settled down and got to work on his "schoolwork".

It didn't take long before he completed everything and had his Hexapillar.

So as I prepare for next week here is what I have learned.

1- I will probably not come up with a prize better than this week.
2- The Dandelion needs less to do and the Tumbleweed needs more.
3- Having scheduled chore days written on paper helps.

We are kicking off our first week of Summer Vacation with a To Do list to try to keep everyone from saying "I'm bored".

I gave the kids a run down of everything on the list after breakfast this morning and showed them the pile of supplies I collected for them. I also explained the punch cards and how they were going to earn punches.

Since it was about to storm, it was the perfect time to pick something to do off the list. Both kids chose coloring.

I still can't tell how many things should be on the weekly list and if I have too much or too little, so there may be some adjustments over the summer. We will see how this week goes...
Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-56854675939670380712012-06-05T23:53:00.005-04:002012-06-05T23:59:19.037-04:00Girl Scouts: June UpdateWith the school year coming to a close, Girl Scouts is also wrapping up. Today we had our final meeting, which was primarily a badge ceremony.

I had prepared a cute badge presentation for each of the girls with the badges that they had earned since March. Here are the Tumbleweed's badges. She earned a combination of "Old" Try-its, "New" Badges, and Council's Own Badges from across the country.

Someone else was using the Library Meeting Room, so we held our ceremony upstairs in the library. While the seating wasn't perfect, the mantle was a nice place to display the badges and the quilt the girls worked on earlier this year.

The girls did their Girl Scout Promise and sang "Make New Friends" before we honored each girl and their accomplishments for the year. The Tumbleweed has been busy working on badges whenever possible and had quite a few badges to show for it.

It was a great first year of Brownies. Definitely a learning process for me as a leader, but I think, after a summer vacation, I will be ready to tackle Year 2.
I don't exactly remember exactly how we got her past it, but I wish I did because look what the Dandelion just started doing...

Just about the same age, too. The Tumbleweed was a few months shy of her 5th birthday and the Dandelion will be 5 at the end of this month. Weird!

I don't really know if this means anything, but I am sort of hoping the Dandelion will pass through this phase over the summer and be back to writing his letters forwards (which he does know how to do) before the first day of Kindergarten.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-75441239914231474902012-04-30T12:34:00.000-04:002012-05-04T10:36:18.065-04:00Girl Scouts: April UpdateApril 3: WOW! Journey Meeting - Water Olympics and Watershed Model

Today we had fun with water by balancing paperclips on top of a cup of water and seeing how many paperclips would fit in a full cup of water.

Balancing on top:

Adding paperclips to the cup. About halfway there...

Final total of paperclips that fit in the full cup... 164!

After we cleaned up the paperclips, we made an example of how pollution gets into the town water. Each girl got to put some food coloring representing a pollutant in a familiar place and then it "rained" and washed all of the pollutants into the rivers and lakes.

We had a guest speaker from the local EMS come to our meeting to talk to the girls. The girls learned about what an EMT does to help people in an emergency (Philanthropy badge) and then about some basic First Aid and ways to be prepared and stay safe. The girls made their own backpack First Aid Kits and we wrote letters to our penpal troop.

April 17: WOW! Journey Meeting - Project Planning

A small meeting, but the girls decided that their Take Action Project would be a Public Service Announcement for the local channel about ways to save water. The girls continued to decorate their water map with their Water Drop promises.

April 19: Pet Adoption Awareness Day

One of the Junior Girl Scout troops in town held a Pet Adoption Day for the younger scouts during school vacation week, and the Tumbleweed was more than thrilled to attend since she desperately wants a pet!

April 24: Flower Frenzy!

Our opening activity was a windsock made from streamers and cardstock, where each streamer contains one line of the Girl Scout Law.
The main activities from today were for the Council's Own "Flower Frenzy" Try-it from Pennsylvania. The girls learned about the parts of a flower and their state flowers before getting to our craft - dying bandannas with flowers. Everyone seemed to enjoy doing an activity with hammers!
The Tumbleweed celebrated her First Communion today. She was very excited to wear her new dress and have our family come visit. At mass she lead the other First Communion students into the church and sat at the end of our row.

She had volunteered to do a reading and was assigned the First Reading. She did a great job reading at the podium and read her passage with expression and enthusiasm. She received lots of complements.

She had also volunteered to sing with several other little girls. When we arrived, the music director asked her to stand near the microphone because he knew she knew the words and would sing. She definitely wasn't shy on stage.

Finally it was time to go to Communion. She was nervous because she had to go first, but decided afterward that it wasn't so bad after all, but she still doesn't like the taste.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-28079110279614971042012-03-10T21:32:00.004-05:002012-03-10T21:46:02.349-05:00Lorax CakeSince seeing the movie the kids have been talking about The Lorax a lot. He doesn't care whether he has a matched pair, or even his own socks. Today at school he was wearing one inside out sock of his own and one of his sister's socks right side out. When we got home he took those socks off and put on two different Lightning McQueen socks.

Most of the time he just picks two socks out of our "lonely sock bin" just as we are about to head out the door. But sometimes he will take one sock from two matched pairs. With all of the mis-matching, combined with his need to remove his socks whenever possible, our single sock pile seems to be growing.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-42847734406699939322012-03-06T14:11:00.000-05:002012-03-08T08:25:07.315-05:00The Messiest Messy FingersWe have a great program at the Millbury Library called Messy Fingers. It is science for preschoolers, with a parent. Each week has a theme geared to preschoolers to get them interested in a variety of topics. The kids do hands on activities for about an hour and families can take home a sheet with other related activities and/or check out library books on the topic.

When she was 3 & 4, the Tumbleweed went to these classes and this year it is the Dandelion's turn. There is a big difference in the kids' personalities that makes Messy Fingers a wildly different experience with the second kid. The Dandelion often has his own agenda, which can make it difficult to get him to follow the class. This is particularly frustrating to me because I know he follows along at school without causing a lot of trouble.

This week was the "Messiest Messy Fingers of the Year" on Solids, Liquids, and Gases. The Dandelion did better than most weeks, behavior-wise. He really got into trying to melt an ice cube and the got especially messy with Oobleck:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA38cRiaIOm4bdMRQVZ_1vEB06-oqU9nSXz8-YIajFDCvkxJ2-4DPgSRwQouPmJB2yAUnutqyyBIhRrlLtILaLm5rhyCkUMd0zK2YuBNcpiQXwxKeriYRwjaAQnJXyjf57DT8k6HM5Ypa7/s320/IMG_0148.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5717513798663106418" />Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-52212402708480561952012-03-04T20:09:00.004-05:002012-03-04T20:25:17.898-05:00The LoraxFriday was Dr. Seuss' birthday and both kids had little celebrations at school. As a surprise I gave the kids the book "The Lorax" at bedtime that night, since I knew the movie had just opened and I figured the kids would be excited to hear the story. That was certainly the case, as the Dandelion requested an encore after the first reading and didn't want to give the book up to his sister to read.

After two days of reading the Lorax, we had the opportunity to head to the movie as a family. The time that worked best for us just so happened to be the 3D showing, so the kids got their first chance at wearing 3D glasses. Both did remarkably well at keeping them on, and I will say that they absolutely loved the movie. The Dandelion requested we go to Target to buy it upon walking out of the theater and was less than thrilled to hear my estimate of "Christmas-time" for its availability.

(Side note: I did not feel the previews were suitable for my kids, although they didn't comment on them and seemed to forget quickly. I would recommend a bathroom trip during the previews for younger viewers because they could be a little too scary.)

When we got back we pulled out some craft supplies to make a truffula tree craft. As usual, the Tumbleweed has been hard at work doing individual badges in her free time, especially during February vacation. I have been keeping busy finishing up the troop quilt, planning the badge ceremony/open house and trying to keep up with the Tumbleweed's requests for badgework. Here is a quick run-down of the month's activities:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjNNSdSSJDyeCBdkMvDO-QCHpVcL6VArVkscm6J4P_r5jWg-JUxvxY6DPkfnuCSLdazfGDwONEZnnIihkepOllO4VW6-rhUg9fACyzI_9g82sj1i-i5OcuZSs-lnQYtxJMNJldYrEPZOTg/s320/IMG_9871.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716613627127708498" />2/4-2/5: YWCA Swim & Fun Overnight The Tumbleweed was counting the minutes to her first sleepover. She had a great time playing & swimming, but wasn't all that thrilled when they started a movie at 10 pm when she was ready to fall asleep. She was the first one to sleep and the last one to wake up... and she followed up with a 4.5 hour nap in the afternoon. Even with the lack of sleep she was eager to plan another overnight!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT32z2C45mArfR7-eBguNdulkPsDLddLtlN4fp0xZmMmTNg1rABQ1UCJBoRqn7gUwL6YM1efiH0F0xdD4Tg0M0VnZ1DiAd60CxvaLI8-iMChJodFayS5i-l__w0vGm-2k8Wee0WX9HCmwX/s320/IMG_9903.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716612117981029586" />2/12: Cookie Booth #2 Yet another frigid day to sell cookies. I thought I might regret taking her out to an event after dance class (8-9pm), but she held up well and had a great time.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkGOLFFLgDyEvLgGpjKAywQKSV8Ivwed1LlmznLwJ_9BOV-96RhH5ddZZqQlOAT6Ax5BM4RxeVGJlcKYJyt7Zb_3ADxsqTPzkl9cGf-W5sVdakyV81Dxt1JqsclLpBDbW1gZ5Zn-pfNK3C/s320/IMG_0047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716612090314205090" /> 2/28: World of Girls Open House We concluded our World of Girls journey by finishing the last story in the book, talking about all of the places we had learned about and what Brownies are called there and having an open house for the parents to see the things the girls had been working on. We had a display of the girls "Historically Speaking" projects (the Tumbleweed did Egypt, Israel & Italy) and I had completed the troop quilt (except hand stitching the binding) so the girls could show their parents the squares they made. We concluded with a patch ceremony.

And while that might seem like a lot, March marks the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting, and is going to be just as busy!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-18684854995457621392012-02-23T20:28:00.000-05:002012-03-04T20:52:53.414-05:00Color Splash Party<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUXPWvfied1S40pyf7HplF3taMlsOPDn8L09RM9ZvNLTvhRO0i_iASzgZT-OREFiIvFFF29fylYf6wtkQQMlwljPRvjCHOeIyY2JssO1XwRtxjLbZtue6887QgFuR3y8Ak6Sbd0zr7OeA4/s320/IMG_9989.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716223918008362914" />
The Tumbleweed is turning 7 this year, and due to our busy schedules, and particularly full March weekends, I decided to do her party during February school vacation. For the first time we had the party at an outside location, Michael's Craft Store. The Tumbleweed wanted her party "somewhere other than home" but she did have some ideas of what she wanted to do at her party. Most places that hold parties in the area have package deals and it is hard to incorporate the themes & crafts she wanted. However at Michael's you can just rent the party room for two hours and I could do the crafts and activities that she wanted. Perfect. No mess at home, a helper provided by the store and a location parents are familiar with.

The Tumbleweed had selected some badge activities out of her Girl Scout books and I helped her modify them a bit for a party setting. We started the party by giving her friends shirts in all the colors of the rainbow so they wouldn't get their clothes dirty. The first activity was a pointillism painting (her current favorite technique) on a cover of a homemade notebook. I had thought this would be the messiest part of the party, but I was wrong, the girls stayed pretty clean!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhxHSfdca9gGAAb_RXmpiyDaNgy_-g-7W-DxrqB9b-97WdIOauS1Odg_iGPllUKU7gr_RqfZOKtRc6Md1jzDMF40075Xg2O669GvDJhxCf6kjh-PgdIPMNupTMzxwgtuK3Eo2ryaAOBSUj/s320/IMG_9975.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716223915402921490" />
The cleanliness was short lived, as next we made chocolate fondue. Yummy & messy. I only wish I had eaten some myself! We moved straight from fondue to frosting cupcakes with a rainbow of colors. The girls got to try some of the different cake decorating tips, making flowers and writing letters. After a little singing, they got to bite in and found that the cupcakes were rainbow-colored on the inside too (the Tumbleweed had found the idea in the American Girl magazine).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihk0vqlIj29ef67xGBfFXHjKxtIhEr_lQMfPQ5WKuyuOGYUMXZQsMfxr2sjiQRU4fblOl7cc9Xpe8_e30qi0v9jcXmKw3I-2OVmv3qN_BCgEIxIjZYvn66GFkaeT7ciWqHD1FOMRkYFRMS/s320/IMG_9993.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716224885608196402" />
After presents & pictures, we made a much cleaner craft - braided and beaded belts. His favorite is "Kittens". Coming in a close second is "How To Care For Your Cat". So yesterday, as he was picking out a few books I spotted another book I thought he would like, "Grow Your Own Cat Toy"

Of course, he was thrilled about the idea of "growing" a cat toy, so this morning I got some catnip seeds and after school he planted his seeds. He is sure they will "grow a cat toy" for Kitty to play with. Not sure he understands that it will grow a plant that can be made into a cat toy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3q5a3emsV5EvjbzLb0yzUxjG1lqUbDxps1_ymuFbmuAIOwSN4HLANP8hKqj9L5PAIn2YJZ-QHXnEIjbH7HMYPYrTFrJHY4pugxHHTzvOtlYsM3o9SH8grYo4e1fF4lS0menQW_ecCOydv/s320/IMG_9886.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716615748617789426" />

We will wait & see...Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-19627480199061816822011-09-01T23:28:00.001-04:002011-09-02T11:58:09.872-04:00Pass It OnAs in most families, the second kid in our house is bound to get some hand-me-downs. Track pants, soccer cleats, books, toys, t-shirts - the usual. Of course, since we have a girl and a boy, some things don't make sense to pass on, like princess nightgowns, pony tail holders and pink pants.

For a moment this afternoon, the kids were in a sharing mood. I was enjoying the sound of them playing together nicely, so I took a few minutes to get something done.

A short while later, the Dandelion came in to see me. Holding up what was in his hands, he said, "Look, [the Tumbleweed] gave me her underwear that doesn't fit anymore. They are for 4 year olds!" [noting the size 4 on one of them]

Chuckling, I told him that they were "girl" underwear and pointing out that they are different from his Cars "boy" underwear.

"Yeah, but I don't mind. She said I could have them." he said, and ran to his room with them. He had to put away these special things that his sister had actually given him. I could tell that it was the fact that she gave him something of hers that was so important to him.

So far, he has not actually put on a pair of princess underwear. He's probably saving them to wear to school - LOL :)Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-17141174354717053222011-08-30T16:02:00.002-04:002011-09-01T16:08:40.225-04:00First Day of School - Take #2The Tumbleweed finally got to head back to school after the original first day was canceled due to Irene-related damage. It was a little strange to have the first day of school called off!

The Tumbleweed had gotten to tour her new classroom the Friday before. She was excited to see the names of the other kids in her class, and she has several friends in her class. I was glad to get some pictures of her at school because I don't get to do that very often :)
Once First Day #2 came, she was pretty eager to go to school. We were ready about 20 minutes early to do pictures before the bus came. As usual, she was a cooperative model. The bus came and picked her up going the other direction, foiling my 'get-on-the-bus-turn-and-wave' picture. Then she was off to Second Grade!
It was a long wait until the bus brought her back. I think it was a little easier than last year, but it was so hard to wait! She gave a thorough description of her teacher, describing her as, "She looks like Auntie but she has curly hair in a pony tail. She was wearing a red dress with white polka dots." And finally, "She looks like she is 21, but she isn't." LOL. And that was most of what we got out of her about how the day went.

She didn't have homework, yet but when she got home she found her desk had been cleared and re-arranged by the "homework fairy". She wasn't too thrilled about this, but seemed to accept it. I am interested to see what second grade homework looks like!

We spent a lot of time at the gymnastics center, where his preschool is located, over the summer and we would often run into to the Dandelion's classmates who were in summer daycare or camps there. Some days we would even see his teachers passing through the lobby and they would tell him how they were getting the classroom ready for him. He was quite excited to go to the upstairs classroom (for the older preschoolers) and even more excited to eat his lunch at school.

Fortunately for him, his school starts earlier than most schools, including the Tumbleweed. He got dressed and ready to go very quickly for orientation day and even mostly cooperated for pictures.
Once at school he jumped right in playing with his buddies from last year. He was rather disappointed when I told him I was staying with him the whole time. He wanted to go back as soon as we left --- which was complicated by the fact that we did go back for the Tumbleweed's gymnastics practice just a few hours later.

Finally two days later, he got to go back for the whole day. He was surprisingly easy going about being dropped off, especially considering that he cried and/or whined when being dropped off most of last year. And even though his best buddy did not come that day, he was eager to stay at school and eat lunch there. At the end of the day he reported that his favorite parts of school were "lunch and recess" and that he had a new "best friend" (a little girl in his class). Sounds like school is a success so far.

It had been a rainy day with a larger number of squabbles and "boredom" episodes, so this seemed fitting.

The Tumbleweed had heard the lesson before (from "7 Habits of Happy Kids"), but this was the first time the Dandelion had heard it. And of course he has already tried it out. This morning he was up before 7:00, which meant he was supposed to go back to sleep and not wake me up. Actually, both kids came and asked for breakfast at 6:25, but were sent back to their rooms.

Two hours later, I discovered what the Dandelion had done to keep himself busy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNIqxpwNRU29odE6-BIpTDhdDdwIAbbi83xzsZJYLqVbgCSiR7mSWrs3wDsnrB8Ah2Uu64W2Uf8baGIT6C844EGK5-lCP-uWPWnzkuirBHfmOQMLdp5PKsl_JPjQ05kohUGV-N2bPQ2-nd/s320/IMG_8322.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641436515480492082" />
He emptied every book off his bookshelves, every stuffed animal out of the bins, and took out a bunch of toys from the toy box.

This comes on the heels of his comment last night while putting away his laundry, "some things are re-ranged, in case that makes you confused". I guess he has decided it is time for a room clean out, because seeing it all lying on the floor makes it look like an awful lot (especially when it has to be cleaned up at once). It was no surprise to me that she was excited to earn patches, and that has not changed though the year. With or without patches, she has really enjoyed the things she has gotten to do and learn.

Sundown Safari @ Southwick's Zoo: This was a a neat program where we got to walk around the zoo with one of the owners, who personally introduced us to the animals and interjected great little stories and interesting information. Among other things, the Tumbleweed got to pet a baby kangaroo and visit the inside of the new giraffe habitat to pet the young giraffe (a place where zoo visitors will not be permitted to go). She asked several great questions and has even been caught using the information she learned at other times since the program, which I love to see!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLZC3_JRahSglwzOsgc5VQfLXeWoHsKXthv5BJ_KySdnnk1Drr2WFDtF_eioK0UsAHm4tbWMTyTfH2YImFtiyAEvxj6dZT5tmDJMGOmmTP4dzhzTQNSAnz2pFYVeOb-hxdHuO2i5VMYDuC/s320/IMG_6220.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615102339566232130" />

Memorial Day Parade: Despite getting rained on, the Tumbleweed was absolutely thrilled to put on her uniform and march through town in the Memorial Day parade. At the beach, the girls were shown some examples of what to look for after low tide and given buckets to go hunting for crabs, clams, periwinkles and hermit crabs. We found some great living things, which we left on the beach, and some pretty shells & rocks to take home. The Tumbleweed soaked up so much information from the program leader and eagerly conveyed it back to the rest of the family when we got home.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU6HvQzXVPTTdogv7X6tw7PRAPyUL2TOA8eOEmMazaYeHeLRQqAzbnRcDVfqkDE5BuqgFdPE0eBgY0Q0GYcT5SrN4D8y5TvCeZYWyETHhh8WcuJjf3nh1_y7cXHmBx4BrYkjBDz5tMydXI/s320/IMG_6433.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615102323952498626" />

The year is wrapping up and she will be bridging to Brownie Girl Scouts soon --- and guess who is going to be her troop leader?Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-68568669325297644812011-05-20T21:09:00.001-04:002011-05-29T20:20:36.677-04:00Goodbye Training Wheels!Last weekend, while I sat waiting for the Tumbleweed's dance class to finish, I received a phone call. On the other end was the Dandelion with something exciting to tell me, "Mommy, I rode my bike with no training wheels!"

Sure enough, Mike had taken him over to the park so he could ride his bike on the paved track. After a few laps, he decided the Dandelion was ready and took off his training wheels and petals. Apparently he was a quick study because only a short time later he got his petals back and was riding around the track.

And after a week of rain, I finally got to see him in action...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0O4f0RjG2wfm8ftI4ACIUCZKTEd8lzQ4Zzb11uzCmC7e17sxBCZlEegO6C42P2shq-XPFEPchix8_m-KYHL_fdqZ2d53EhhKoIZqQgnSBGO7hsp0-HZ_LAXtuwqP7uMCyZQSA9nh7w4TR/s320/IMG_6297.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612296061789535778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtiDZUKGaJhzj4TVakZvfrzyDOQta-C5ovKZFgvGZ39ZLZ0EzyjxcwElT3e_5p4ODsqbfeM5GjKPt_jCZU5I6PeQf3QEIOV7qg81hf6jn4YF6KpyWyX7k-jTbgWytWt9h_NFk6cCpjYCdI/s320/IMG_6299.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612296058022178226" />
He was one proud little boy!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdK-0n26LbZ1SQqmunc69R7xRMFByGQhx8WIKax7glnKRbLdZIzezUgW7GLa5eQ7Kl2riNFhIPPGx9rxzf_zJyRHJ2HiIOSyQArNIBHYcRy05mOlol9ieySvh5EXLpPPy7FLIe2vVBnyVZ/s320/IMG_6294.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612296067554708626" />

Meanwhile, the Tumbleweed was also riding laps around the track learning to use the hand breaks and change gears on her new bike.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFms6yHmyB0ioQjM2K5HwzFTP-SehMHWhBUkUgsFDsmBRV-ybw6tRrK1cgImna3YHhawBiSHRBZ1EL6bBfNmE0uopWG_cpbM3SdI-7uDsYN_PfLyVzF4_EGEzodwERqbYbVseBVGm-AA0S/s320/IMG_6295.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612296818911559666" />
They both look so grown up compared to last year.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-30329889917736431062011-05-18T10:12:00.004-04:002011-05-18T10:34:21.726-04:00Movie Merchandising in the Grocery StoreIf you have met my son, by now you know that he likes the movie Cars and anything to do with it. And if you have seen us recently, whether you know us or not, you also know that the new Cars 2 movie happens to be opening on his 4th birthday, June 24th. In 38 days, to be exact.

And since Cars 2 is the latest Disney-Pixar movie, we are now under attack. Disney has got to be #1 in getting their name/characters on "stuff" and Cars 2 is no exception. In fact, I think it is worse than Toy Story 3 last year at this time. Here are the latest grocery items they have taken over...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVABnd0Yqi4q3w8Sc_DmcVYvqJEUM_ogzUWbX_H1xxDVLXF-5g1Yl09ncsCM1-t13VmNldUKYRwgxS4SjZ7Xz7A5Ol-EtFeZlPbMQLf4OmRyk0No3qJ0EjkQGOrMpcrQh9PE8EzuIR2imv/s320/IMG_6285.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608061346468998578" />
Fruit snacks are almost always available. Cheez-Its and Mac & Cheese I had expected after they were themed with Toy Story last spring. Go-Gurt and pretzels (in a nut-free brand) were a nice surprise. But Cars 2 Cereal and 9 different flavors of Juicy Juice, each with different characters on the box?!?! I even saw an ad for chicken nuggets shaped like Cars!

What will they think of next? Well, I hope it will be "Mater's Tomaters" (grape tomatoes), "McQueen's Lightning Bolts" (carrots cut like lightning bolts), or "Fillmore's Organic Fruit & Veggie Fuel" (any number of different ways you could go with that). It seems like a shame to put all of the money into "junk food" when they could actually help us parents out by putting kids favorite characters on the foods/packaging that we are begging them to eat! Come on Disney, give us a hand!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-37856155864526794952011-05-07T20:21:00.001-04:002011-05-29T20:41:11.115-04:00Kids Tri TooThe Tumbleweed kicked off the triathlon season with a splash. She had been working hard in her swimming lessons to do the two lengths without assistance (bubbles/noodles). Early on we figured out that her best stroke was probably backstroke. This is pretty ironic because swimming on her back used to be a huge battle.

At the race she did exactly what she had planned - backstroke, no noodle! From there she was off to transition, where unlike last year she did not need any help. She mounted her bike and off she went!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVhk2FJWntFcUgcT1oQkHFgIym-Sw61eKmX0s1WRvjflHsCJGcQFg5W_DlFcIQFsTab42tvWDOv9whGSYDc7gNySs7TOOnCpvC2RuArPgN_JZKYLufsIRBcWwOlhq9BI1rWtw0bL5MGhPX/s320/IMG_6032.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612302459088768402" />
She finished strong with the Dandelion running much of the way along side her (he so badly wanted to be in the race!)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Ur3hhAj6LWeqQmFW3Ck9lxhCKJ7Rmxp5qHXt4S7874QjnXil5q7IxMDZXu0kj-CR8tLCdsnQf1HllAco6i7FDWF3WhzEovlqmw6LIB95IZBERb_OhQEb792Xht2OVquW26Ra_u_DutdP/s320/IMG_6044.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612302451510538914" />Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-64717813531308238272011-05-02T13:34:00.002-04:002011-05-03T21:55:29.380-04:00Long JumperThe Dandelion is taking an All Sports class at the YMCA this spring. They started off the first week with a track & field theme. Week 1 was running and hurdles, and this week, Week 2, is jumping and throwing. Of course the running week was a big hit with the Dandelion, but I could not have predicted how much he took to the long jump!

When the teacher explained how the kids were to run up and jump onto the mats, the 3 & 4 year olds sat along the wall and waited for a turn. The first couple of pairs of kids took their turns, but didn't really jump and just ran across the mats. With no one before him actually jumping, I think the teacher was a bit concerned that her long jump idea was going to be a flop. But have no fear, the Dandelion got up for his turn and, when she said go, he did exactly what they were supposed to do. He ran about 8-10 steps, took off from one foot before the mat, flew about 3.5 or 4 feet (to the 3rd color panel) and landed feet first before flopping forwards, just like they do in the Olympics. You would think he'd actually seen it or done it before!

Since I didn't have my camera ready during the original attempts, we took a few pictures after class.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqoMRaIdIQb9NmOq2CnwSdlnvXI4iNBzaLXATErVulSiypRzv5bjyQVR7jdlqRggmqSKxVJmsFRFyLQgnnt9a6o5_99uJDB6kAerWS0yiINSidbDNz0PhEA8E7AljSJj-1OxxorZkHeMhp/s320/IMG_5996.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602668743245517858" />in the air

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhou02N5vBsnD5w_cpIrRm0VkLiLDNPeC-lHhR8AxI7HXHwTjIbvXAGJv0WZouiGY-oOtYMcT7DrnYPFm3V_5hzH8VTtq_ea-Ma_51D0xCTV_kCL6a29tIkq2lqDflOMDs-FUVZwUSx4EKc/s320/IMG_5995.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602668737500893586" />feet down

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG23YLv5S9ZXnJ9JsRksXLEon0SBqtMs0mPlQ_0NX7z18QHVfuS-vfkrTSuOEWlKID9agrRxLMIXNq_vnJwDvuAZSGeeY9SOVsDlB-qsyPrBzJF5YNhMq_zJ25liWnho4xC8MqMyRZQzTg/s320/IMG_5999.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602668743684773074" />forward momentumKristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1341214081744704570.post-60706607749575629172011-05-02T11:03:00.002-04:002011-05-02T11:15:54.544-04:00Gonna Find A Rainbow<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKZ372DDcdTfI5CmDlBv01j97iKOoXBrz_EYQdAAjQXOpwGKhdKPrTFXSD7gX7qc8YbYnAXQ0fNWcALBhd0gA6wEz50iW3XeuOLvUqnrQmpJ8u2F7p2tljlAcNvrvEGYm_26UKhonUG_mJ/s320/IMG_5986.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602136033616032146" />

I have decided we need a theme song for Monday mornings at our house. I have selected The Brady Bunch singing "Gonna Find a Rainbow", because each and every Monday morning the Tumbleweed has to find clothes to wear that have every color of the rainbow on them. Thankfully we have numerous different ones to choose from.

Why, you ask? Because Monday is Art Day.

Not enough of a reason?

No, they aren't required to wear multi-colored outfits for inspiration or to disguise spills. The Tumbleweed wants to wear every color because the teacher calls colors to decide the order the kids get to pick their seats and she wants to be first.

It's competitive seating, and she wants to win each and every week so bring on the colors!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09313961867770737287noreply@blogger.com1
